Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 1, 1970
This policy explains what KATARUU collects, why, how the KATARUU Score is generated, what happens if you make your episodes discoverable, and how to exercise your rights — including the specific rights guaranteed by GDPR (EU/UK), CPRA (California), and BIPA (Illinois).
What voice and transcript data we collect
When you record an episode on KATARUU, we collect and process:
- Audio recordings of your voice (per question and the final assembled episode).
- Transcripts generated from those recordings by our speech-to-text provider (Deepgram).
- Derived metadata: duration, language, segment timings, and the questions you answered.
- Account data: email, name, and any optional profile fields you provide.
- Usage data: minutes recorded per month, episode events (created, finalized, listened to).
Recordings and transcripts are stored in encrypted, private storage. They are accessible only to you and to the limited KATARUU systems required to produce your episode.
Third-party AI processors. KATARUU relies on three AI processors, each acting on our instructions and bound by contract not to use your content to train their models: Deepgram (speech-to-text transcription and text-to-speech narration), Google (via the Lovable AI Gateway, for episode scoring), and Anthropic (AI text generation — interview questions, summaries, social post drafts, and your Synthesis). All three processors are United States-based.
How the KATARUU Score is generated
Your KATARUU Score is a number out of 100 representing the clarity, confidence, and impact of your voice on a given episode. It is generated by:
- Sending your transcript to Google Gemini (via the Lovable AI Gateway) and your audio to the Deepgram speech engine for transcription.
- Computing four rubric-based sub-scores — Clarity, Structure, Confidence, and Insight — which together form your Delivery Score out of 80.
- Blending 70% Delivery Score with 30% Reach Score (listens, completion rate, ratings) to produce the final 0–100 KATARUU Score.
- Storing the score against your episode so you can see it on your output page and in the email we send you.
The score is generated for your own use. We do not publish it next to your name in the public voice library without your explicit opt-in (see Discoverability below).
AI-Generated Profile (Synthesis)
To personalize your experience, KATARUU automatically generates and stores a short written summary of the themes, topics, and speaking style found in your published episodes (your "Synthesis"). We use it solely to (a) generate better, non-repetitive interview questions for your future episodes, and (b) compose the occasional personalized prompt email described below. Your Synthesis is derived only from your own recordings, is never shared with other users or sold, is disclosed only to our AI processors acting on our instructions, and is not used to make any decision producing legal or similarly significant effects about you. It is recomputed when you publish a new episode; content from episodes you delete is excluded from every recomputation. California residents: your Synthesis is an "inference" under the CCPA/CPRA and is covered by your rights to know, correct, and delete. You may object to this processing or request deletion of your Synthesis at any time via privacy@kataruu.com; it is permanently removed when your account is deleted.
Product & Prompt Emails
We send two kinds of email. Transactional messages (sign-in links, episode notifications, receipts, account notices) are necessary to provide the service and cannot be opted out of while you hold an account. Product-update and prompt messages — including an occasional personalized question inviting you to record again — are sent on the basis of your consent, given via the "Product updates & prompts" setting in your Account, which is on by default and can be turned off at any time. Every such email tells you how to stop receiving them, consistent with the CAN-SPAM Act. We honor opt-outs immediately and send no more than one prompt email in any 7-day period.
Discoverability and the public voice library
Off by default. Your episodes are private to you and the people you share the link with. They never appear in the public voice library unless you turn on the Discoverability toggle in your account settings.
When discoverability is on:
- Your finalised episodes can appear in the KATARUU voice library — a browsable, searchable index of voices that have opted in.
- Visitors can listen to the episode, see its public title, topic, and your KATARUU Score.
- We never share your email, phone number, or raw recordings outside the playable episode.
You can turn discoverability off at any time. When you do, your episodes are removed from the library within 30 days.
Third-party Intelligence subscribers
KATARUU may offer a separate, paid Intelligence product that lets approved third parties search and analyse aggregated voice-library data — for example, to find voices on a topic, or to study communication patterns at scale.
- Only episodes from users who have explicitly opted in to discoverability are eligible.
- Intelligence subscribers receive a contractual prohibition on re-identification, on contacting voices outside the platform without consent, and on storing the underlying audio.
- Subscribers see aggregated and pseudonymous outputs by default. Direct access to a specific voice requires that voice to be discoverable.
- You can withdraw at any time by turning off discoverability or deleting your account. New Intelligence queries will stop returning your episodes immediately; cached results are purged within 30 days.
How to exercise deletion rights
You can delete all of your KATARUU data at any time from your account settings, under "Delete all my episodes and data". This action:
- Immediately hides your audio files, transcripts, KATARUU Scores, and share pages.
- Triggers a confirmation email so you can recover within 30 days if it was a mistake.
- Permanently deletes everything (including any voice-library copies) within 30 days.
You can also email privacy@kataruu.com to request export, correction, or deletion of any specific data.
EU / UK rights (GDPR)
Controller: KATARUU (contact: privacy@kataruu.com).
Lawful bases: performance of the contract you enter when you create an episode; explicit consent for voice processing, biometric processing, and discoverability; and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and improving it.
You have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of your data.
- Rectification — correct inaccurate data.
- Erasure — delete your data (see Deletion above).
- Restriction — limit how we process your data.
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Object — to processing based on legitimate interest.
- Withdraw consent — for voice processing or discoverability at any time, without affecting prior processing.
- Lodge a complaint — with your local supervisory authority (in the EU) or the UK ICO.
To exercise any right, contact privacy@kataruu.com. We respond within 30 days.
California rights (CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) gives you the following rights regarding the personal information we collect about you.
Categories collected: identifiers (email, name), audio/voice recordings, internet activity (usage metrics), inferences drawn from your voice (KATARUU Score).
Sources: directly from you (recordings, profile), automatically from your use of the service.
Purposes: to deliver the episode you requested, generate your KATARUU Score, keep the service secure, and — only with your opt-in — display your episode in the public voice library.
Sharing / Sale: we do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. If we ever do, we will offer a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link.
Your CPRA rights:
- Right to know what we collect, why, and who we share it with.
- Right to delete your personal information.
- Right to correct inaccurate personal information.
- Right to limit use of sensitive personal information (your voice recordings are sensitive PI under CPRA — we use them only to deliver the service unless you opt in to additional uses).
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising any of the above.
To exercise these rights, email privacy@kataruu.com. We will verify your identity before responding.
Illinois rights (BIPA)
If you are an Illinois resident, the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) governs how we handle voiceprints and biometric identifiers.
What we collect: we collect and process voice recordings, which under BIPA may constitute "voiceprints" — a biometric identifier. We do not enrol your voiceprint into a re-identification database.
Written consent: when you sign up for KATARUU, we ask for a separate, explicit checkbox consenting to the processing of your voice recordings and transcripts to generate your KATARUU Score and — if you choose — to appear in the voice library. That consent is your written release for the purposes of 740 ILCS 14/15(b).
Purpose: to generate your audio episode, your transcript, your KATARUU Score, and (only with your opt-in) to make your episode discoverable. We do not use your voice data to identify you in any other context.
No sale. KATARUU does not sell, lease, trade, or otherwise profit from your biometric identifier or biometric information.
Retention and destruction schedule: we retain voice recordings and derived voiceprints only as long as needed to operate the service, and in no event longer than 3 years from your last interaction with KATARUU — whichever occurs first, per BIPA 740 ILCS 14/15(a). When you request deletion, we destroy voice recordings, transcripts, and derived scores within 30 days.
